The Catch, another sea song from my Some Days Are Diamonds album was a song I dedicated to fishermen. They have a most dangerous job, putting to sea in all weathers to bring home their catch.
Very difficult times indeed for them right now, shafted completely by the very people and an ideal many of them erroneously voted for, as they are finding out now. Prices for their catch hitting unbelievable lows as their fish lay rotting.
Whilst I despair for my own industry I despair for theirs too. Why so many of them listened and believed the lies at the time of the vote over Brexit I still do not understand.
Many people standing on the outside of the failing industry will speak of OUR fishing waters and OUR fish. Mostly they regurgitate stuff they've read in the government's mouthpiece press and when you listen to those people it's really not the fishermen they are caring about at all, it's really about not being ruled over by the EU. What they fail to grasp is that they are being ruled over now by their own despotic government who would seem to care even less about the fishing industry and that it was just a chip on the table to be played with as they played a poor game of brinksmanship with the EU.
Where the fishing industry goes from here we will have to wait and see but this song is still there for the men who put their lives at risk every time they set sail to bring home the catch.
